Hey Kessy x Abbey Sy Washi Tape Launch: Make Things Happen

I can't believe we already have 7 original washi tape designs since we started in 2011! The latest design, Make Things Happen, was a collaboration with Abbey Sy, one of the most talented local letterers today.

For the launch, we invited crafters and makers for an afternoon of crafting - we made shrink art jewelry and painted porcelain cups and bowls. Abbey also gave a short talk about her design, and also about, yes, how to make things happen!

Shrink Art Keychain for Father's Day!

Father’s Day is coming up! What sort of things do you associate with your dad? For Hey Kessy intern Gianne, she thinks of coffee mugs, watches, suits and ties, among other things. Using shrink art sheets, she made these little trinkets of all the things that remind her of her dad.

Shrink art is such a fun and easy way to make small gifts. You can use it to create a variety of things, such as jewelry, charms, bookmarks, or keychains. Here’s a simple project that you can make to show your appreciation to your dad!

Shrink art key chains!

MATERIALS and TOOLS:
  • Shrink art (available at the Hey Kessy shop)
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Toaster Oven
  • Mittens (for safety)

STEPS:
  1. Draw your dad's favorite things on a shrink art sheet. You can use markers or paint. Make sure that it's 60% bigger than the size of the keychain that you want. Remember, it's going to shrink!
  2. Cut out the pieces, make sure that there's an allowance around your drawing, and punch a hole for the key ring.
  3. Bake them in the oven for 2-3 minutes. They will curl (don't panic!) and flatten. Take them out when they're flat already.
  4. Let them cool down before hanging your dad's keys.

You can even use them as gift toppers...look!

Let's Be Makers Workshop: Basic Watercolor with Raine Sarmiento

We recently launched a new series of workshops where we invite other crafters, makers, and artists to teach at the studio. The first one was a Basic Watercolor Workshop with Raine Sarmiento, and we were thrilled at how it turned out!

The participants (my interns and I were able to sit in!) learned about different brush strokes and techniques on how to paint still life. Here are some of the photos of that crafty afternoon:

Mother's Day at Hey Kessy

In partnership with I Try DIY, we prepared a craft station at the shop to celebrate Mother's Day! Shop visitors were able to make greeting cards and tags using craft punchers, markers, hand-carved stamps, ink pads, and cardstock.

My kiddie craft interns, Mawsy and Mitaw, also hung out to make their own card and test out our new products made especially for the young ones - We Can Too finger paint, sculpting dough, sidewalk chalk, and crayons. They're all veggie-based and organic! Super fun and safe for the kiddies.
