Craft Workshops and Pop Up Shop in Bacolod: Danjugan Island Arts Festival

As part of the Danjugan Island Arts Festival in Bacolod City this week, we'll have Papercutting and Rubber Stamp Making Workshops from 1pm-6pm at Tippy's Bistro, 10th Lacson Street. Proceeds of the workshops will go to the conservation of the Marine environment through Danjugan Island. For more details and to register, go to: workshops.heykessy.com.

Hey Kessy will also have a craft shop pop up during the workshops. We'll bring washi tapes, lettering and calligraphy tools and materials, DIY temporary tattoo sheets, stickers, inkpads, and other craft materials we're sure you need especially this Christmas season!

​Aside from the workshops and craft pop up, there will be other events happening during the festival:

December 18: AMLIG Exhibit Opening Night, 7pm

December 19: Open Mic with 3 Little Birds (Comedy Collective Bacolod), 6pm

Craft Workshops in November

It's already mid-November and before we know it, Christmas and holiday parties are just a few days away! Before you panic with your Christmas gift list, here are craft workshops you can attend this month, where you can make cool gifts for your loved ones! Giving a friend the gift of an afternoon of making is a pretty good idea, too!

1. We have a new workshop! Cynthia Bauzon-Arre will come over to teach different techniques on how to turn your drawings and doodles into wearable shrink art plastic like necklace pendants, earrings, and brooch pins!

3. Another new workshop is Shibori! If you are into dyeing and would love to learn the Japanese way of making patterns on fabric, we have a basic Shibori workshop on November 29! The participants will also learn how to prepare an indigo vat, and dye Christmas beach blankets - which you can also use to wrap your gifts with the Furoshiki style.





3. Do you have dried flowers, leaves, and other little treasures that you want to encapsulate in resin? JJ Ponce will have a Basic Resin Workshop on December 5!

4. If you want to make your own ceramic plates and imprint on them using your own hand-carved stamps, then this 2-in-1 on December 12 workshop is for you!

Craft Exchange: Hey Kessy x The Letter J Supply

We’re always excited when crafters and makers from other cities visit us, and hold workshops the studio. Not only do we get to travel through their stories, but we also learn a new craft, technique, and somehow adapt their fresh take on things.

For our first Craft Exchange, a calligrapher friend from Singapore, Joanne of The Letter J Supply, flew in with her intern, and held a Brush Calligraphy Workshop. As Tipsy mentioned, Joanne's style was different and refreshing! 

Macy and I also took them to a Sunday market in Makati, and toured them around the different sections - there were handmade products, fresh produce, and local delicacies. 

 

So sweet of Joanne to gift us original artworks! :)

Three Craft Inspirations for the Weekend

After a long week of work, stress, and horrible traffic, it’s nice to unwind with a bit of crafting - so here are some of our craft picks for a bit of inspiration. This week’s theme: paper crafts!

Some colored paper, wire, and green washi tape are all you need to make this floral DIY!

2. Doily Watercolor Printed Cards by The Elephant of Surprise 

The delicate details of a paper doily makes a beautiful but easy pattern you can use to brighten up anything from greeting cards to notebooks.

Another great use for washi tape! Stay organized with a little help from these super cute washi page markers.

Hi everyone!

We'll be organizing several events and workshops in the coming months, so we'll be needing interns again. We’re looking for individuals who are:

1. Highly organized

2. Know Photoshop

3. Social media savvy

4. Crafty

It’ll be fun work, but they will also need to handle some clerical tasks - emails, reports, and other admin matters - to gain valuable skills for their future careers.

Homemade Soap

I tried making soap the other weekend, and liked it! Being surrounded with kindred spirits, learning about a new craft in a lovely house in Antipolo - if you know me well, you'd know that I'm most calm and at ease whenever I'm surrounded by trees, plants, and leaves - and making soap over delish food our teacher Ana Gutch of Body Food All-Natural and his brother, Vitty, served made my Saturday morning perfect.

I was amazed with Ana's huge collection of additives for her handmade soaps - dried orange peels, hibiscus powder, tea leaves, flowers, cinnamon, lavender, essential oils, cocoa butter, and many other she bought locally and from her travels abroad. I admire how dedicated she is to her chosen craft. She's always trying new combinations, experimenting with new soap recipes.

Here are the things I used for my first bar of soap:
Essential Oils: Lavender + Sweet Orange + Thyme
Additives: Apple + Cocoa + Hibiscus + Green Tea Leaves + Cinnamon + Chrysanthemum + Charcoal + Sweet Pea




I gave sample slices to my friends Tippy and Abbey, and my interns. I hope they like it. :)

Getting Crafty in Japan

Hello! Intern Cara here writing for the Hey Kessy blog! I went on vacation in Japan, and I got to scout for crafty destinations in Osaka and Kyoto, and here are my three favorite spots:

1. Kamogawa-jinja Shrine Handmade Arts Fair
Kamogawa, Kyoto

The Kamogawa-jinja shrine located on the outskirts of Kyoto holds a regular arts and crafts fair every month on the beautiful temple grounds. It's a lovely atmosphere where crafters from all around Japan come together and showcase all their unique works - and it's a great place to scout for some inspiration, talk to other makers, and maybe grab a couple of great buys while you're at it.

How to go: Take either the Hankyu or JR line to Kyoto and take Kyoto City Bus 4 to the last stop at Kamogawa-jinja. Only happens on the fourth Sunday of every month.

2. Richoche+  

Minoh-shi , Osaka

If you love gardening, terrarium making, and getting down and dirty with your crafts, this little shop is absolute heaven. Aside from a wide assortment of plants to take home, Ricoche+ also has a variety of upcycled materials like boat wood and antique tiles tiles that would look amazing in any home decor DIY. If you’re able to speak and understand Japanese, they also offer workshops every now and then!

How to go: From Osaka station take the Midosuji subway line to Senri-Chuo, then take the Q’s Mall bus to get to where Richoche+ is located.

3. U-Arts  

Namba, Osaka

This place is a must if you love cats just as much as crafting! U-Arts offers a huge variety of cat-themed supplies, and it's also a great place to stock up on things like Copic markers, paints, and different kinds of papers for all your crafting needs. They also have a amazing collection of washi tapes, cat-inspired and otherwise.

How to go: Take the Midosuji subway line to Namba station, and take the exit going to Doguyabashi.

Whenever I go to Japan, I always find new things to try. It’s where I discovered my favorite craft, needle felting, and  I’m sure anyone who visits these three spots will be able find some amazing things to make as well!
